43 ACT Athletes Headed to Commonwealth Games Trials

A team of 43 ACT athletes will be heading to the Gold Coast this month to compete at the 2018 Australian Athletics Championships and Commonwealth Games Trials. The championships held at the Commonwealth Games Athletics venue (Carrara Stadium) will also double as a test event ahead of the Games in April.

A number of ACT athletes will be vying for a spot on the Australian team for the Games, including two-time Olympian Lauren Wells who will be lining up in her pet event the 400m Hurdles and the Long Jump. Wells goes into the Championships with multiple A qualifier’s in the 400m Hurdles and a handful of B qualifier’s in the Long Jump. Australian Record holder and Olympian Melissa Breen will be looking to secure a spot on the Australian team going into the Championships with 2 B Qualifiers in the 100m.

Staying on the track, Canberra youngster Keely Small will contest the 800m. Small posted a B qualifier early last year with a stellar run at the Summer of Aths event in Canberra and will go into this year’s Championships as one of the youngest qualifiers. Small will be supported by coach and competing athlete Philo Saunders who will return to the Australian Championships for the 19th consecutive time in the 1500m.

In the field Kelsey-Lee Roberts will go into the Javelin with 7 A qualifier’s and will be looking to the Commonwealth Games to improve on her Bronze from 2014 in Glasgow. Coach Mike Barber will have his hands full over the championship weekend with Sophie Stanwell competing in the Heptathlon, Angus Gould in the Long Jump, Jayden Sawyer in the Para Shot Put and Para Javelin, and Eloise Millington in the Triple Jump. Stanwell finished 4th at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and no doubt will be hoping to improve on that result this year. Also in the field events World Para Champion from London 2017 Cameron Crombie will be aiming to secure his spot in the Shot Put for the games in April.

Other athletes to watch

·         Jessica Penney – Long jump. Already had 1 B qualifier

·         Jake Lappin – 1500m Wheelchair. Has an A and B qualifier and will be fighting it out with Kurt Fearnley

·         Angeline Blackburn – has returned to form in the 400m with a 53.51 this year and will be hoping to hit the 52.10 A mark on the Gold Coast

·         Emily Brichacek – 5000m. Brichacek has made a strong comeback following injury and will be looking to hit the 15.22.0 qualifier this month.
